No Info’s self-titled debut ep is a six-song introduction to the band’s unique blend of trippy, jazz-adjacent R&B. Technically five songs and an intro (slyly titled “No Intro”), these tracks not only showcase the group’s technical and compositional chops, but their genre defiant approach to songwriting. Incorporating sonic elements of dub and reggae, jazz chords and melodic manipulation, and the smooth, laid-back tone and rhythms of contemporary R&B, No Info is an astoundingly assured initial offering.

Every song on the ep flirts with familiarity but bends toward the beguiling.  Nothing seems to fit how it’s supposed to. On the first song “Wool,” notes bend into melodies that slither into and out of key. Sometimes it’s difficult to discern what instruments are even being played – the guitar tones are soft they might be keys; snare sounds are triggers, another guitar spends more time building atmosphere through delay effects pinging around than contributing melody. Only the bass sounds entirely organic. Somehow the overall effect remains unerringly smooth despite how disorienting the music itself can be.

The music is consistently cool and dynamically chill. While the parts are sophisticated and perfectly executed, it’s difficult for the music not to still feel like a vehicle for the vocals. Femme and forward in the mix, the rich and confident vocal delivery floats atop the vibes and winds around within the space created. There are some detectable influences of traditional jazz vocals, but is sounds more like a singer interested in seeing what their voice can do, rather than trying to emulate or exemplify a specific style. There’s nothing experimental about this music – it manages to be both straightforward and adventurous at the same time. To my ears, this is the sound of artistic pleasure on record. Try not to smile in admiration at the dual soloing on “Sheep” – and tell me if that isn’t two hard panned basses doing the soloing.

The musicians making up No Info have developed and captured a winning chemistry. Each instrument shines at appropriate times, and each instrument takes a supporting role when that’s the right thing to do. It’s a professional approach, and the end result is an accomplished work of sophisticated music.
